2015 Chadron Middle School NeSA Results

We are pleased to announce the results of Chadron Middle School's 2015 NeSA results.  CMS students scored very well on all four subject tests: Reading, Math, Science, and Writing.

Highlights include: increased 5th grade reading scores for the second year in a row, 6th and 8th grade reading scores that exceed state averages, strong math scores, and science and writing scores that exceed state averages.

Information about NeSA: Students across the state of Nebraska take the NeSA in grades 3,4, 5-8, and 11.  At Chadron Middle School, all students are tested in reading, and math.  5th and 8th grade students are tested in science and only 8th graders take the writing test.  Scoring categories include Below Standard, Meets Standard, and Exceeds Standard.  Overall proficiency is calculated by combining Meets standards and Exceeds Standard scores.

We are proud of our students and teachers for the hard work that did last year and we are excited for all of the learning that will take place this year.

CMS Opens New Playground

On August 25th, Chadron Middle School celebrated the official grand opening of its new playground with students, parents and friends.  Students participated in a ribbon cutting ceremony with the Chadron Chamber of Commerce and then enjoyed hotdogs, chips, and drinks before taking their parents into the school to show them around and meet teachers.

The opening of the playground comes after a year and a half of fundraising efforts through which over $15,000 was raised.  The funds were used to pour a concrete basketball court and install a fence around the play area.  The improvements that were made make up the first of three phases of the project.  Future plans include pouring more concrete, installing a shade structure with tables and benches, and an underground sprinkler system.

A special thanks goes out to all of the partners that helped with the fundraising efforts.  These partners include: Walstrom Ford, Morford's Decorating, Chadron Kiwanis Club, Chadron Rotary, SDS Construction, Main Street Dental, The Chadron Ladies Golf Association, Three Girls' Produce, Chadron Middle School Student Council, Classics in the Park Car Club, and countless parents, students, and friends.

Thank you to everyone that attended the event and for making it a very special night!

Recap of First Three Days of School

Well, the first three days of the 2015-16 school year are in the books and I think that we had a great start!  The Grab and Go Breakfast was a huge success!  We had and average of 49.6% of our student body participate during the first three days, which is fantastic!  I hope that the kids enjoyed the opportunity to grab a quick snack and that it helped sustain them during their morning classes.

The block schedule got off to a good start as well.  There were few scheduling glitches and the kids that I've talked to seem to like it so far.  Students had two "A" schedule days and one "B" schedule day this week, so I think that they got a good taste of what rotating classes will be like.  As we continue through the school year, please let me know if your student(s) are struggling with the schedule so we can find ways to assist them.

Student drop off in the morning also went well.  I spent the first three days in front of the building monitoring traffic and having two drop off areas has improved congestion.  Just a reminder that traffic should flow, as much as possible, east towards Cedar St. and parents should avoid making a left hand turn at the stop sign on Ann Street.  Thank you for your efforts to ensure that students get to school safely in the morning.

Students had an opportunity to enjoy three beautiful afternoons on the playground during lunch break. The fence has improved student safety as there are fewer balls, and therefore kids,  running on to the street.  Please note that several students commented that it was cold in the morning, so keep that in mind as you help your child get ready for school.

As always, if you have any questions, comments, or concerns regarding your child's education and/or overall school experience, please let me know.

Thank you again for a great start to the school year!

Best,

Nick Dressel
Chadron Middle School Principal

THANK YOU!!!

Parents,

Thank you for attending the back to school student/parent orientations this week.  The turn out at all three meetings was spectacular!  I hope that you found the meetings informational and that they helped get you and your child ready for the start of a new school year.  I greatly appreciate your flexibility and patience in dealing with all of the venue changes as well as the hot and crowded rooms.  If you any questions or concerns, please let me know.

5th Grade Orientation in Chadron Primary School Gym

8/13/15

Parents,

The CMS gym floor is not finished, so we are going to begin the 5th grade orientation in the Primary School gym at 5:30.  You can park on the east side of the middle school and enter the Primary School through the east door.  There will be a 40-minute informational meeting and then students will pick up their locks and schedules before heading over to the middle school to check things out.

Thank you.

Dress Code Video

Parents,

This dress code video was produced by Natron County School District, but it provides a good example of the Chadron's dress code guidelines too.  If you have a chance, please watch it.  Thank you!

CMS First Day of School Schedule and School Supply List

Below you will find links to the first day of school schedule and school supply list for Chadron Middle School.  Please note that on the first day of school students will go directly to the gym at 8:00 for an all school assembly.  If they bring school supplies on the first day, they will have to carry them until the assembly is over.  Parents are encouraged to bring their students to the back to school meetings so that students can get their schedules and put supplies in their lockers.  If parents are unable to attend the meetings, students can come to the school during the week of August 10th to put school supplies away.

Thank you.

Chadron Middle School's back to school student/parent meetings will take place in the CMS library instead of the gym.  The dates and times of the meetings will remain the same.  Please use the north east entrance and the library is located on the 2nd floor toward the middle of the hallway.

Meeting Schedule:
6th grade meeting - August 11th at 5:30
7th/8th grade meeting - August 12th at 5:30
5th grade orientation - August 13th at 5:30

Student/Parent Meetings

August 10th, 2015

Parents,

We are 10 days away from the first day of school, which means that it is time for our annual student/parent back to school meetings.  This year, in addition to the usual policy/handbook items, we will discuss the new block schedule, drop off and pick up procedures, the CMS grab and go breakfast program, and students will be able to get into the building to put school supplies in their lockers.

I have schedule three grade level meetings, but feel free to attend the meeting that best fits your schedule.  The 6th-8th grade meetings are virtually identical in terms of content that will be covered. However, the 5th grade meeting is geared towards out new 5th grade students and the program will be a little different.

*All three meetings will be at 5:30 in the Middle School Gym:
August 11th - 6th grade
August 12th - 7th and 8th grade
August 13th - 5th grade

Parents, please bring your student(s) to the meeting with you so they can put school supplies in their lockers. On the first day of school the entire student body will meet in the gym for an all school assembly before going to class.  Students will not be allowed in the academic building before school. If you are unable to attend the meetings, students may drop off school supplies in their lockers during the week of August 10th.

If you are unable to attend one of the meetings, please feel free to email, call or drop by the office to ask me questions.  I'm excited for the start of the school year and I can't wait to see all of our students!

Sincerely,

Nick Dressel
