5th Grade Fun Night

5th graders get ready for balloon tag

On Friday, September 21st, about 40 5th grade students participated in the annual 5th Grade Fun Night that is Sponsored by the CMS Student Council.  5th graders played balloon tag and took part in a scavenger hunt that required them to search inside of the school for the answers to 70 questions.  The night wrapped up with a relay race and prizes were awarded to the winners of the three activities.

5th Grade Fun Night is designed to give our 5th grade students an after hours activity because they are not allowed to attend the school dances and they don't have school-sponsored athletics to look forward to.  We hope that our 5th grade students had a good time!

Neighborhood Party to Celebrate Firefighters

The following was submitted by Colette Fernandez, Executive Director of the Chadron Chamber of Commerce:

Chadron will be hosting a Neighborhood Party to celebrate our firefighters, their families and the blessing that no lives were lost in our recent wildfires!

Please join together on Saturday, September 15 at Wilson Park in Chadron (near the shelter) from 5-7pm for a picnic and story sharing with your neighbors.  We would love to have those affected by the Douthit, Ash Creek and Wellnitz fires together for this party!

Please bring  a side dish or dessert, your lawn chairs and any Thank You posters that you have made.  You can post them in the park anytime on Saturday.

If you are able to contribute to this celebration in one way or another, please let us know at the Chadron Chamber of Commerce or City Hall to see what is needed.  Otherwise, see you on Saturday!!!

September Good News From School

Dear Parents/Guardians:

It is hard to believe that we are already near the end of the first mid-quarter!  Three early dismissals in August and school closures due to the fires certainly was an abnormal start to the school year.  Nevertheless, we are back on track and ready to roll through the first quarter!

With the end of the first mid-quarter comes Parent-Teacher Conferences.  Middle School Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held on September 20th from 5:00-8:30pm in the MS Gym.  I believe that parent/teacher conferences are extremely important because it provides parents/guardians the opportunity to discuss their child’s academic progress with the classroom teachers.  I also encourage you to bring your student(s) to the conference because we want to stay focused on the ways that we can help them be successful in school and they should be a part of that conversation.

Fall sports are in full swing.  Volleyball and Cross Country have already had several competitions and football will have their first game against Torrington on Saturday, September 15th.  We are very proud of our student athletes and the positive way that they represent our school and our school district.  I know that they appreciate all of the support that they receive at school and at home.  You can click on CMS FALL SPORTS CALENDAR to see the schedule and click on Transportation Schedule to see dismissal and bus departure times.  Go Cardinals!

6th and 8th grade students will take the Nebraska Risk & Protective Factor Student Survey during the week of September 17th.  The purpose of the survey is to learn how students in our school feel about their community, family, peers, and school.  The survey also asks what students think about different health behaviors and drug use.  The survey is anonymous and confidential.  The survey is also voluntary, so if a students may option out.

Fall NWEA MAPs testing will begin in October.  MAPs tests assess student progress in Reading, Language Arts, Math, and Science.  The tests that are given in the fall provide us with baseline data that we use in several ways.  First, it helps us assess our academic programs and gives us an idea of the specific academic areas that we need to focus on in the classroom.  Second, we use the data to place our students in classes that will ensure that they receive the support that they need to improve.  And third, we use the data to help our students set assessment goals.  It is extremely important that all students be present for testing because we do have a tight testing window and there are only a few make up days at the end of the testing window.

Thank you for supporting your student and the programs at Chadron Middle School and if you ever have any questions, comments, or concerns, please let me know.

Sincerely,

Nick Dressel
