CMS: 2-Hour Late Start and Modified Schedule for 2/28 and 3/1

Dear Parents,

We cancelled school today because when I checked classrooms early this morning, the building was about 40 degrees. We needed the day to plan an alternate schedule and to procure space heaters for classrooms. The second pump should be here on Friday, so hopefully things will be back to normal next week. Thank you for your understanding and support.

We are planning on having school tomorrow. We will run a 2-hour late start, but the gym, which is on a separate heating unit, will be open at 7:50 for students who arrive early. Breakfast will be served at 8:00 and we will keep the kids in the gym until the other students arrive. At 10:00, we will break students up into their instructional groups, send them to their lockers to get their supplies and classes will begin. The rest of the day will be a modified block and students will be concentrated into three classrooms per grade level so that we can focus our heat there. Below is the bell schedule that we will follow. Unless something changes, we will plan on running this schedule on Thursday and Friday.

8:00-10:00 - Gym open for students who arrive to school early
10:00-11:25 - Block 1
11:30-12:30 - Lunch (whole school)
12:35 - 1:50 - Block 2
1:55 - 3:15 - Block 3

Of course you have the option of keeping your child home if you don’t feel comfortable sending them to school with the current plan in place. I will excuse those absences, but your students will miss instruction. We only have five days until the end of the quarter and we want to make sure that our students have every opportunity to finish the quarter strong.

Building Temp at CMS

Dear Parents,

One of the boiler pumps at Chadron Middle School failed sometime during the evening or early morning on 2/25. The other pump is working, so there is some heat is being provided to the rooms with most classrooms temperatures between 58-68 degrees. That said, the building is cold.

Right now we are planning on having school tomorrow. At the end of the school day on 2/26, I made an announcement letting staff and students know what was going on with the heat and I request that our students dress appropriately for the season and not to wear shorts or sandals. If we do have school tomorrow, please help reinforce the need for students to dress appropriately.

If school is cancelled, I will post the announcement on Twitter @ChadronMS, on the school's Facebook page, on this blog page and on Remind. Please check these sites for all school closure notices.

Thank you for your support,

Nick Dressel
